Applying HIVE in solving Word Problems

Hi 6E. Today, we discussed on some strategies to solve Word Problems. You can remember this acronym HIVE and apply the following steps:

1) H- Highlight key phrases in the question.You can do this by underlining, highlighting, circling and annotating the key words in the question.
2) I - Identify the strategies or the first steps that you need to take to solve the question. E.g Drawing diagram, Drawing guess and check chart, Doing systematic listing or it can be even as simple as carrying out addition, subtraction, multiplication or division
3) V-Visualise the steps/solution. Have a clear idea on how you want to go about to solve the question. Try to visualise the number of steps you need before you can arrive at the final answer.
4) E-Execute the plan and solve the question.

Hope this will help you to do a little better in solving word problems.

I will away on full day course on Thursday, 4 Feb. Please complete Fractions Practice 3 in class if you have not done so, discuss your answers with the Relief Teacher and submit latest by Friday, 5 Feb. Thank you.
